It is believed that Gangubai used to live in Kathiawad area and she was called Gangubai Kathiawadi. Her real name was Ganga Harjivan Das Kathiawadi. At the age of 16, Gangubai fell in love with his father's accountant and he married the boy and fled to Mumbai, where she was sold into prostitution by her boyfriend. The hard life of Mumbai’s red-light area turned her into a tough lady. Gangubai, who was herself a victim of the prostitution trade,  become one of the most dreaded pimps of Kamathipura during the 60s. She piled her trade in Kamathipura. Many of underworld gangsters were her regular clients.
Despite being a dreaded lady, she had a soft corner for women who were sold into prostitution. Gangubai used to fight for such women and cared for them like a mother. One such incident of Mumbai includes her fight with gangsters whom she fought for a girl from her brothel who was allegedly raped by a gangster. Gangubai was the undisputed queen of the brothel business in Mumbai. She remained unmarried all her life.

Gangubai was well-known for her efforts to bring about better living conditions in Kamathipura.
​Although Gangubai lived in the slums of Kamathipura, she was a rich lady. She was the only brothel madam, who owned a black Bentley in those days.
Gangubai once approached Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then-Prime Minister of India, to discuss the problems faced by the sex workers in her district. Reportedly, Nehru was quite impressed with her leadership qualities and clarity of thoughts.
Gangubai’s kind heart had won her many admirers. Even today her idols and photo frames adorn many walls in Kamathipura.
The Bollywood director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, decided to make a film based on the real-life story of "Gangubai". The Bollywood actress, Alia Bhatt, has been offered to play the lead role of ‘Gangubai’ in the film.

Alia will be seen in gray shade for the first time.Two posters of the film have been released. In one of which Alia is seen as straightforward girl. At the same time, Alia is seen in a completely different look in the other poster. The second poster is black and white, only Alia's face is visible in this poster.

The film is featured in one of the chapters of Hussain Zaidi’s book “Mafia Queens Of Mumbai.” It's release date is 11 September 2020.
